End Use: Borders containers.
Chinensis x Barbatus F1’s These types can be sold not only in the Spring, but also in flower in the Autumn, as they are hardier than the Chinensis types. Perennial Varieties Perennial, sow May-July, cover seed with vermiculite, germinates in 2 weeks at 18-21°C, 800 seeds per gram. Sell in: 6-packs, 8-10cm pots, generally green plant with colour label, also in flower (compacter types). End Use: Borders, rockeries.

Exciting and innovative pollen-free self-cleaning series. The lack of pollen means no seed is set and therefore there are no seed head spikes to remove as you would with conventional varieties to encourage further flowering. With Falcon the inflorescence spontaneously falls off after flowering and further flowers are produced. In addition to this self cleaning trait the inflorescence lasts more than 7 days longer and the plants produce 20% more flower than convential varieties. Cultivation methods are the same as conventional varieties. Sowing to flowering 14 - 16 weeks. Plants are well branched and compact 25cm in height without inflorescence, 35cm with inflorescence. Good tolerance of direct sun and partial shade.
Pelargonium' Tender perennial usually treated as annual. Approximately 220 seeds per gram. Variety selection depends on final use. Multi-headed types such as Multibloom are especially good for early pack sales. For pots and bedding, Mavericks and Horizons are hard to beat. Ivy-leafed types (Tornado and Summer Showers) are a fast-growing alternative to cutting-raised types. Where cost is an issue, the newer F2 types such as Cabaret offer an alternative to the F1 varieties. Sow December-February, or earlier (October) to overwinter cool and flower as early as April. For sales in May, sow early to mid January. Cover with vermiculite A fungicide drench at sowing can help reduce the risk of Pythium disease. Germination is rapid (4-6 days) at 21-23°C, keep constant compost temperature, and do not allow the moisture level in the compost to drop too low, otherwise germination will occur in flushes. Prick out after 4 weeks into packs or pots, grow on at around 15°C - takes 13-15 weeks from sowing to flower depending on the variety. Always provide adequate moisture levels to maintain active growth, but be careful not to over-water as plants, especially if tightly packed, will be prone to Botrytis attacks, and because of this it is preferable to water earlier in the day, so plants can dry off before night time. Cycocel (growth regulator) can be used to ensure a compact habit.
Perennial types: 3 weeks at 20°C, sow March-July cover with vermiculite. Sell in: 2 litre pots as green plant with colour label. End Use: Borders.

An early maincrop variety with a high resistance to Downy Mildew (Peronospora destructor (Pdr)). Globe shaped bulb with good bright finish to skin. Suitable for long term storage.
Salad onions: Standard salad crop for bunching; relatively low maintenance, and some varieties are also suitable for overwintering for early lifting. Suitable for fresh market and prepack use. 240-360 seeds per gram. Germinates 5-30°C. Sow March-April for Spring crop, overwintering type July-August, pickling type mid February-March. Seed rate 15-20kg per hectare, at a population of 65-70 per metre row length.
Bulbing onions: A popular crop - long storage lives make for a good continuity of supply. Also popular for plant sales and competition growing. 240-360 seeds per gram. Germinates between 5 and 30°C, sowing date mid February-March, Japanese (overwintering) types second or third week in August. Seed rate 4-5kg per hectare, 2.5-10 x 40-60cm spacing.
The advantages of growing onions from sets (immature bulbs), rather than from seed, are that there is: shorter time to maturity, less sensitivity to soil types and a lower incidence of pest and disease.
Approx. 180-200 bulbs per kilo of sets. Space 10cm (in row) x 25cm (between rows). Plant so that the tip of the bulb is just visible above the soil. Best results achieved from planting mid March to mid April. Planting into cold, wet ground can cause bolting so do not plant too early. Heat treatments are used to kill the flower embryo this prevents bolting in early plantings.

Petunia F1 Dot Star Dark Violet (pellets) (PED080P)
A unique series of seed raised Petunias that have been bred over many years and are genetically different to cutting raised varieties of a similar apperance and without the financial drawbacks. Dot Star are well branched with flowers in vibrant colours overlaid with white dots and spots giving a fun splattered effect. High level of weather resistance. Height approximately 30 cm.
Annual, sow on the compost surface from February-April, germinates in 7-10 days at 20°C. Prick out after 4 weeks into packs or pots as required. Grow on at 12-15°C; growth regulators can be used, according to the manufacturers’ guidelines. Sowing to flowering takes around 12 weeks. 9,000 seeds per gram. Note-Star and Picotee types: Care must be taken when growing these types to avoid high temperatures, high light levels and high soil fertility, as this will increase the proportion of white. Conversely low temperatures, low light and low soil fertility will result in a decrease in the proportion of white. Sell in: 6-packs (basket & ground cover varieties in 9-10cm pots). End Use: Baskets, containers and borders.
Grandifloras produce fewer, but larger, flowers than the multifloras. However, flower size is not the only difference between Grandifloras and Multifloras. Multifloras generally grow faster, have more branches and flowers, hence providing more masses of colour. Other differences are smaller, thinner leaves, and flowers are usually not as ruffled or fringed. They also have greater disease resistance and weather tolerance.

New hybrid varieties with more unusual fruit shapes, colours and sizes are proving very popular both with fresh market sales and retail plant sales. Young tomato plants remain the best seller for vegetable plant sales to the public.
