Dania is a new attractive, uniform Primrose series for the early market. It has less cold requirement, making the series highly suitable for early sowing and flowering from November onwards. The Dania series has been bred for natural compactness great for 9.5cm and 10.5 cm pots and packs.
For pot plant or perennial sales depending on variety. Sow late June-early July. Germination max temp 18°C, keep moist, cool and shaded, cover seed with thin layer of vermiculite to anchor the germinating seedlings. 1000 seeds per gram, 1.5-2g for 1000 plants.
Market prices for primroses remain under pressure despite their enormous popularity. To maximise their potential here are some suggestions.
1)Target flowering to coincide with maximum sales demand, e.g. choose Last Dance for sales in late February-March.
2)Use added-value lines like Rosie in mixed bowls and arrangements.
3)Spice up the colour range with special mixtures such as Dreambird and Glory Fantastique.
4)Grower-retailers - consider a ‘primrose special’ weekend promotion to kick off the sales season at the end of February.
Hardy varieties:
Ideal for sale in pots and packs as green plants in Autumn/Winter, and in colour in early Spring.
Perennial varieties:
Sow in Autumn, place in cold frame over Winter to germinate. 1000 seeds per gram.
