For lifting towards the end of July, this hybrid produces high yields of semi-globe, dark skinned bulbs. Stuttgarter type. Suited to long term storage.

Our bulbs are produced in the UK to ensure that they are ideally suited to UK growing conditions. All bulbs supplied are size 14/21 subject to adequate availability.

Most set bulbs are lifted in the early Autumn but need to dry and mature in order to achieve the best results. We therefore deliver our brown skinned bulbs from late February onwards, with actual delivery times varying with each variety. Early maturing brown skinned varieties and red skinned varieties need more heat treatment and so are normally delivered from mid-March onwards. If you order both brown and red skinned varieties they will normally be shipped together.

Please order as early as possible because availability can be tight but demand high.

Salad onions:
Standard salad crop for bunching; relatively low maintenance, and some varieties are also suitable for overwintering for early lifting. Suitable for fresh market and prepack use.
240-360 seeds per gram. Germinates 5-30°C. Sow March-April for Spring crop, overwintering type July-August, pickling type mid February-March. Seed rate 15-20kg per hectare, at a population of 65-70 per metre row length.

Bulbing onions:
A popular crop - long storage lives make for a good continuity of supply. Also popular for plant sales and competition growing.
240-360 seeds per gram. Germinates between 5 and 30°C, sowing date mid February-March, Japanese (overwintering) types second or third week in August. Seed rate 4-5kg per hectare, 2.5-10 x 40-60cm spacing.

The advantages of growing onions from sets (immature bulbs), rather than from seed, are that there is: shorter time to maturity, less sensitivity to soil types and a lower incidence of pest and disease.

Approx. 180-200 bulbs per kilo of sets. Space 10cm (in row) x 25cm (between rows). Plant so that the tip of the bulb is just visible above the soil. Best results achieved from planting mid March to mid April. Planting into cold, wet ground can cause bolting so do not plant too early. Heat treatments are used to kill the flower embryo this prevents bolting in early plantings.

Very High Quality

Planted at equidistant 20cm spacings. Produced a crop with 51% of the bulbs at over 500g ie very large onions. The sets themselves were the ripest and firmest sets I have ever seen and the quantity was overweight. There was literally only 3 unplantable sets in 1kg. Cannot recommend highly enough and have re ordered

Cupid’s and red baron sets

Bought 2.5kilo cupido and 500gm red baron sets and planted them two day ago ,excellent amount of nice hard sets no waste in in red baron of 220 sets , with 530 Cupid’s sets of good quality ,so entirely happy planted 150mm equal distance so will wait and see !
