An attractive first year flowering perennial, this atropurpurea type produces bushy plants with clusters of wiry stems producing unusually coloured rich burgundy flowers, with contrasting paler outer petals and white stamens. Good for attracting butterflies. Suitable for containers and borders. May need some protection in winter. Height: 50-60cm.
Annual varieties: Sow direct into open ground in May. For seed count see species descriptions. End Use: Cut flowers.
Perennial varieties: Sow March-June, germinates in 2-3 weeks at 18°C, cover with vermiculite. Prick out into 9-10cm pots after 4 weeks, grow on at 10°C, sell as green plant with label, or in larger pot in flower. Approx. 75 seeds per gram. Sell in: 10cm or larger pots. End Use: Borders.
